Spotlight on Hopetoun House
From that first glimpse on the approach to the expansive beauty of the entire façade unfurling before you, Hopetoun House is truly deserving of its reputation as the country’s finest stately home.
And all this grandeur is yours to revel in as an incomparable events space.
The ancestral home of the Hope family for more than 300 years, and still the current home of the Earl of Hopetoun and his family, the house dates back to 1699 when it was commissioned by Lady Margaret Hamilton for her son Charles and his new bride.
Designed by Sir William Bruce it was later altered and improved by the renowned Scottish architect William Adam, resulting in the beautiful façade and magnificent colonnades, new pavilions, and grand State Apartments.
Its opulence has been a draw for centuries and its walls have witnessed countless gatherings, dramas and even a state visit. Sir Walter Scott managed the visit of George IV who knighted artist Sir Henry Raeburn in the Yellow Drawing Room with Lord Hopetoun’s sword.
All of which made Hopetoun a star long before it featured in several seasons of the hugely popular Outlander television series, hit period drama Belgravia and the Princess Switch movies to name but a few.
So, there is plenty of inspiration for your own Hopetoun experience. Imagine being Lord of your own manor, with not only the elegant house but 144 acres of farm and parkland to play with.
We think that there are endless possibilities at this unique property, known as ‘The Versailles of the North’. Why not take centre stage in your own horse drawn ‘royal’ procession, complete with entourage, in the splendid grounds followed by a coronation banquet in the State Apartments. Or arrive in style by helicopter or charter a private jet to fly into Edinburgh Airport – it’s only five miles away.
Of course, what Hopetoun is hugely popular for (and rightly so) is a location for an unforgettable gala dinner. With a drinks reception allowing guests to explore the house, perhaps with Lord Hopetoun himself available to mingle and tell stories of growing up in this stately home, followed by a sumptuous banquet in the Adam Ballroom.
Smaller, more intimate dinners can take place in the grand dining room, with guests seated at the antique Chippendale dining set – who knows what magnificent scenes they have been witness to!
The house is the most glorious backdrop for any occasion and Limitless experts can showcase your event, company or celebration against this extraordinary setting with an awe-inspiring illumination projected onto the façade.
Hopetoun general manager Piers de Salis says: “We’ve had some of the most incredible events here, especially the ones with major illumination trails and projections. They just transform what is already a really special place and we’re constantly amazed by the creativity of our clients.
“But most importantly, we absolutely love hosting. In 2023 we were TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice winner and we can’t wait to see what other fantastic events are conjured up in this magical venue.”
